FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions

Check out these popular answers to the most frequent questions about teen and adolescent therapy.

We typically do not see client below the age of 8. However, there are times when exceptions could be made i.e. seeing the other siblings of a family system and it would be therapeutically prudent for the entire system to see the same therapist. However these exceptions are rare. Please message us with the specifics of your case and we can discuss it.
The type of therapy I typically provide works very well with ages 8-18. I prefer to work with 12 and up, but have seen tremendous improvement in younger youth as well. Although I am familiar with several play therapy modalities and are able to work with those under 8, this is not my preference.

QUESTION

Tym is not a Registered Play Therapist nor does he have any play therapy certifications. He is familiar with several play therapy modalities, however. While at Converse University Tym had the opportunity to work with some of the best play therapist supervisors in the state and they taught me much and he has had several hundred hours of play therapy experience. That being said, working with those 8-10 and under is not my preference but exceptions can be made.

Therapy can provide valuable support in navigating school challenges. Whether it's obtaining or modifying an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan, I work collaboratively with teens, parents, and educators to address academic, emotional, and behavioral needs. The goal is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Our therapy is designed to address a wide range of issues, including academic stress, anxiety, depression, identity exploration, family conflicts, and more. Whether your teen is facing school-related challenges or struggling with personal concerns, therapy offers a confidential space for exploration and growth.
Identity exploration is a common aspect of adolescence. Therapy provides a safe space for teens to explore and understand their identity, including gender concerns. For those questioning their gender or in the process of gender transition, I offer supportive and affirming care, including writing WPATH-8 SOC (World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care) letters for gender-affirming medical care when appropriate.

Resistance to therapy is not uncommon, especially among teens. In such cases, I approach therapy in a collaborative and non-coercive manner, allowing the teen to set the pace. Building a trusting and supportive relationship is a priority, and I work to create an environment where teens feel comfortable expressing themselves and working towards positive change.
